Leslie Martin

Connections, First Baptist Program Director & Volunteer Coordinator

Why do you do the work you do?
Older adults have wisdom and inspiring life stories that I love listening to and learning from them. It is fulfilling when I can add joy to an older adult’s day, encourage them to revisit a past activity/skill or teach them something they never tried before.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love the days when we all enjoy a good laugh together and share stories! I love to witness new friendships between the folks we serve. I love when a member is proud of their work with an art project, experiences success with a new game, or gets up and dances to their favorite song! Mostly, I love when a member says they “had a great day, and I’ll see you tomorrow!”

Why is the type of work you do so important?
Loneliness within the older population is prevalent and can be isolating. Older adults need social connection, cognitive stimulation and challenges, safe physical exercise, fun and laughter!

What difference do you feel our service – and your work – makes for those we serve and their loved ones?
Our services help maintain the older adult’s abilities, diminish social isolation, alleviate depression, maintain mobility, encourage creativity, and so much more. The programs give caregivers much-needed help while providing quality care for their loved ones.
